Numberless slogans about Sardinia reveal the nature of its charm on his visitors: as it happens with precious stones, its peculiarities seem to be really uncountable. The people who ploughed the Mediterranean sea met with this land, which could be both a refuge
(for its natural harbours) and a source of precious resources: the obsidian, the mines of lead and silver, the rich plains of Campidano.
The Nuraghi (military constructions) are by all means the most important and suggestive monuments; they are scattered along the island and, as untiring bulwarks against old menaces, they stand and watch from the tops of the hills. Other old constructions are the Domus de Janas (funerary constructions) and the Pozzi Sacri (religious constructions).
Aragonese and Piedmontese people alternated in the island, leaving their traces in culture and traditions, which find expression in the numberless folk festivals celebrated during the year: the carnivals of Oristano, with its Sartiglia, and that ones of Mamoiada, Orotelli and Ottana, which bear a strong stamp of pastoral life; the rhythms of Easter in Castelsardo, Alghero and Oliena; the great folk festivals; Sant’Efisio in Cagliari, the Cavalcata and the Candelieri in Sassari, the Redentore in Nuoro, the Ardia di San Costantino in Sedilo. From the Seventies on, Sardinia has exploded as a tourist phenomenon. The Costa Smeralda (wanted by Karim Aga Khan) acted as a launching pad in the elite of international tourism for the island. The transparency of the sea, embellished by the extreme whiteness of the shores, the maquis with its colours and scents, the breathtaking cliffs, all this is what the visitors find in Sardinia, being at every moment more fascinated. This is a place that, in every season of the year, keeps on astonishing people and that is looking forward to have Your visit. |
